Virtual Exhibition: The Weed of the Brain
Exhibition Concept
This exhibition establishes a cross-disciplinary approach that examines the discipline of neuropathology from the perceptive of an artist and young carer. The concept is to develop an art installation in response to the artists personal experience of the brain tumour Glioblastoma Multiforme. Her research aims to highlight innovative treatments and create discussions regarding the influence of plants within patient treatment.

Anna Roberts
ARTIST
Anna Roberts is a current Art in Science master’s student, her practise involves augmented reality, installation and other multimedia pieces.
Her previous qualifications as an Art History student, provided her with a broad knowledge of theories and movements. Her particular interest into Surrealism and the role of the mind within art, lead to her current focus on the Neuroscience within Art; concerning brain tumours.
Her current practice explores innovative treatments into the incurable brain tumour Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). After having a personal experience of her mother passing away from GBM, she uses her artistic practise to inform and spread awareness into this complex but common brain tumour. Through her collaborations with Neuroscientists, Plastic Surgeons and Augmented Reality experts, she conceived her exhibition concept ‘Glioblastoma: The Weed of the Brain’. Her pieces reflect the botanical influence into treatments for brain tumours; thus, eluding to the power of plants within medicine through soundscapes, installations and augmented reality.
Glioblastoma is a complex and aggressive form of brain cancer. Anna hopes her work can bring a sense of awe towards the innovative research into treating this disease and the influence of nature. Although this does not reveal concrete treatments, it does offer a crucial dialogue into the effectiveness of plants within medicine, and spread more awareness into funding brain tumour research, for incurable tumours like Glioblastoma.
Katie Toulson
CURATOR
Katie Toulson is a current Exhibtion Studies Master’s student at Liverpool John Moores University. Their current practices and interests involve the use of technology within art spaces and how technology can enhance the artistic experience.
Recently, Katie has graduated with a first-class degree from the History of Art and Museum Studies course at Liverpool John Moores University which has equipped them with a vast range of knowledge of the general art world. During their time on the course, they began to delve deeper into the curatorial side of art and focused on the role of the art gallery, as well as seeking different ways to curate and display art.
Due to an upbringing surrounded by the early advancements of technology, Katie has been inspired and amazed by video games and the online culture of them. With this passion, Katie aims to create an exciting future for art where people can come together from all over the world to experience new interactive digital artworks and exhibitions. Some of their other current practices include the ideas of escapism within digital art and video games, and how this can be translated into an online format for people to experience and be informed by.
